Salernitana
The team has only recently experienced its peak. Previously, they had only briefly ventured into Serie A once, and in the 2011/2012 season, they were playing in the fourth division. But in 2021, they made a breakthrough back to the top flight. Moreover, they managed to stay there for three consecutive campaigns, even if their performance was often lackluster. The team was relegated last spring, just as everyone had grown used to seeing them in Serie A. And the drop was as disastrous as it gets: they finished last, in 20th place, with dismal statistics.
It was clear from the start that even at a lower level, the club would face an uphill battle. Still, they somehow managed to "outdo" expectations in a negative sense. The only consolation is that they improved at the end of the season and, with a few wins, overtook Sampdoria. Samp went straight down to Serie C, while Pasquale Marino's side, finishing seventeenth, secured a play-off spot.
Frosinone
This club, along with their current opponents, also dropped out of Serie A a year ago. The saying that "third time's the charm" didn't work for them: their third attempt to stay in Italy's top division ended in relegation just like the previous two. This time, it was especially painful: they were in a fairly safe position for most of the season, but ultimately finished just one point behind Empoli and Cagliari, landing in eighteenth place.
It seems the team never really recovered from that blow. Their season was mediocre, as they languished in the lower half of the table. A winless streak in April and May, spanning six matches, nearly spelled disaster. But in the final round, they faced an unmotivated Sassuolo, and by beating them, managed to climb to sixteenth place.
