Hamburg vs Mainz: Can the hosts surprise the favourites?
The second round of the Bundesliga brings us an intriguing clash at the Volksparkstadion: Hamburg will host Mainz on 6 September, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30 local time. For HSV, this will be one of their first major tests since returning to the top flight.

Hamburg are back in the Bundesliga with a clear objective — to establish themselves among the elite rather than simply make a one-season appearance. The team knows the value of home matches, with the atmosphere at the Volksparkstadion traditionally one of the club's biggest strengths. But against Mainz, the support from the stands alone will not be enough — HSV will have to cope with a high tempo and serious pressure.
The visitors have far more Bundesliga experience, which makes Mainz look like the more mature side. However, HSV should certainly not be underestimated. These opponents met last season as well, drawing 1-1 in Mainz in February 2026. Hamburg showed then that they were capable of competing even away against a more established opponent.
