Borussia Mönchengladbach will host Elversberg, the newcomers to Germany’s top flight who have already made a big statement. If the favourite was obvious before the start of the season, the situation has become much more interesting after the opening round.

Borussia Mönchengladbach began their campaign away at Leipzig and suffered a painful 0-3 defeat. The team failed to score and spent almost the entire match chasing the game. For a club expecting a much stronger campaign this season, the start was clearly not what the fans had hoped for.
Now Mönchengladbach have an excellent opportunity to respond quickly. A home game against a newly promoted side is exactly the kind of match where the team will be expected not only to take three points, but also to produce a convincing performance. Borussia-Park is traditionally capable of creating serious pressure on visiting teams.
Elversberg, however, can arrive in Mönchengladbach without any fear. The Bundesliga newcomers caused a major upset on the opening weekend, beating Bayer 3-2 at home. It was a historic victory for the club in their first-ever Bundesliga match. Elversberg scored three times, and their advantage during the game was thoroughly deserved.
Lucas Petkov and Cole Campbell were the standout performers, while David Mokwa scored the third goal. Bayer attempted to fight their way back through goals from Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane, but the newcomers held on for a memorable victory.
That leaves us with an interesting situation: one team comes into the match after a 0-3 defeat, while the other arrives fresh from beating one of Germany’s strongest clubs. Psychologically, the advantage is clearly with the visitors at the moment.
At the same time, Elversberg’s opening victory should not be overestimated. The Bundesliga is a long campaign, and the newcomers now have to prove that their sensational win over Bayer was not a one-off. It will be particularly interesting to see how they cope with the pressure of playing away from home.
There is another interesting detail. The teams have met only once in an official match — in the DFB-Pokal in December 2020. Borussia won that encounter comfortably, recording a 5-0 victory. However, almost six years have passed since then, so this statistic should hardly be considered a serious argument in favour of the hosts.
For Borussia Mönchengladbach, the priority now is to avoid a second consecutive setback. The team need to start games more quickly, show greater attacking aggression and prove that the defeat to Leipzig was simply a poor start.
Elversberg are likely to rely on an organised defence and quick transitions into attack. After beating Bayer, the players have received a huge confidence boost, so the visitors are unlikely to spend all 90 minutes sitting deep.
In my view, this match could be much more interesting than it initially appears. Borussia are objectively stronger on paper and have home advantage, but Elversberg have already shown that they are not afraid of facing big-name opponents.
