One of the standout fixtures of Saudi Pro League Matchday 5 takes place on Friday, September 4, when Al-Shabab welcome Al-Hilal to SHG Arena in Riyadh. Kick-off is scheduled for 21:00 local time. The teams arrive in sharply contrasting moods: Simone Inzaghi’s side have opened the league campaign with four consecutive victories, while Al-Shabab are still searching for their first win.
Al-Shabab: attacking quality has not yet translated into victories
Thomas Letsch’s first weeks in charge have been difficult in terms of results. Al-Shabab began the league season with a 1-3 home defeat against Al-Qadsiah and have since drawn three matches in succession: 0-0 with Al-Khaleej, 3-3 with Al-Riyadh and 1-1 away to Al-Hazem. That leaves the Riyadh side with three points from four rounds and no league victory.
There is enough individual quality for Al-Shabab to cause problems. Yannick Carrasco remains the main creative figure, with Yacine Adli, Josh Brownhill and Daniel Podence giving Letsch several technically strong options behind Roger Martínez. The latter scored against Al-Hazem after a Carrasco assist, and Al-Shabab created enough in that match to record 11 shots and eight corners.
The bigger issue is stability. Al-Shabab have already conceded seven goals in four league games, including three at home against both Al-Qadsiah and Al-Riyadh. Personnel problems also affect the back line: Dhari Al-Anazi is listed as suspended for this fixture, while Mohammed Harbush remains unavailable with a long-term knee injury. That forces Letsch to alter a defensive unit that had been largely unchanged during the opening rounds.
Al-Hilal: four matches, four wins and an attack operating at full speed
Al-Hilal’s start has been much more convincing. Inzaghi’s team beat Al-Faisaly 4-2, Al-Fayha 3-0, Al-Khaleej 5-1 and Al-Ahli 3-0. Across those four league matches, Al-Hilal have scored 15 goals and conceded only three, while also keeping clean sheets in two of their last three league outings.
The 3-0 victory over Al-Ahli was particularly impressive. Sergej Milinković-Savić opened the scoring, Crysencio Summerville added the second, and new signing Ollie Watkins came off the bench to score on his debut. The England striker gives Inzaghi another direct, mobile option through the centre and could now be pushing for a starting role.
There are nevertheless some important selection questions. Salem Al-Dawsari remains unavailable, while Inzaghi confirmed after the Al-Ahli match that Ali Lajami would need further assessment and Theo Hernández had felt pain and would be monitored by the medical staff. For that reason, Al-Hilal’s defensive personnel are less certain than their attacking options, although Hassan Al-Tambakti and Moteb Al-Harbi provide alternatives.
Team news and likely selection
Al-Shabab’s most recent starting XI featured Mory Diaw in goal, Mohammed Al-Thani, Tin Jedvaj, Mamadou Barry and Dhari Al-Anazi in defence, with Brownhill and Adli controlling midfield and Al-Hammami, Podence and Carrasco supporting Martínez. Al-Anazi’s suspension means at least one defensive change is required.
Al-Hilal started the Al-Ahli game with Yassine Bounou, Mohammed Mahzari, Ali Lajami, Kalidou Koulibaly and Theo Hernández behind Nasser Al-Dawsari, Rúben Neves and Milinković-Savić, with Summerville, Mohammed Meïté and Sultan Mandash in attack. Watkins’ successful debut and the fitness doubts surrounding Lajami and Hernández could lead to changes.
Head-to-head: Al-Hilal have repeatedly found a way through
Recent meetings also favour the visitors. Al-Hilal won both Saudi Pro League clashes last season, 1-0 at home and 5-3 at Al-Shabab’s ground. They have also avoided defeat in seven consecutive meetings between the clubs, winning six of them. The previous league meeting at SHG Arena showed exactly why this matchup can become dangerous for Al-Shabab: even scoring three goals was not enough to take a point.
Al-Hilal’s attacking depth should expose Al-Shabab again
Al-Shabab have enough attacking talent to make this competitive for stretches, especially through Carrasco and Podence, and Al-Hilal’s defensive injury concerns are worth noting. But the difference in current rhythm is significant. The hosts have not won any of their opening four league matches, while Al-Hilal have won all four and scored at least three goals every time.
Inzaghi can also change the profile of his attack without lowering the overall level. Summerville and Milinković-Savić are already producing, Watkins has made an immediate impact, and Neves gives the visitors the control required to punish an Al-Shabab side that has struggled to maintain defensive structure for 90 minutes.
A simple away win is priced too short for the target range, so the handicap offers the more interesting option. Al-Hilal have won each of their four league matches by at least two goals, and their last visit to Al-Shabab ended in a two-goal victory as well.
