England, Middlesbrough, Riverside Stadium

Two teams sitting inside the Championship’s early promotion race meet at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, October 10. Middlesbrough are third with 15 points from eight matches, while Wolverhampton are just one point behind with a game in hand. Both sides entered the international break in strong positions, making this one of the standout fixtures of round nine.

Middlesbrough: Hellberg’s team are proving difficult to beat

Middlesbrough have recovered impressively from their early defeat at Blackburn and are now unbeaten in six consecutive Championship matches. Kim Hellberg’s team have collected wins against West Bromwich Albion, Queens Park Rangers and Norwich during that run, while draws against Burnley, Millwall and Birmingham have kept Boro firmly among the leaders.

Their recent matches have also shown how dangerous they can be going forward. Middlesbrough beat Norwich 4-3 before consecutive 2-2 draws with Millwall and Birmingham. Against the latter, Max Arfsten opened the scoring and Adilson Malanda rescued a point late on.

Hellberg has recently preferred a 3-4-2-1 structure. Callum Brittain and Arfsten provide width, Aidan Morris and Riley McGree control central areas, while Amario Cozier-Duberry and Myles Peart-Harris operate behind Will Lankshear. Tommy Conway, Jeremy Sarmiento and Kyle Joseph also give the coach several ways to change the attack from the bench.

The main personnel concern is defender Alfie Jones, who has been dealing with a calf injury and is listed for a return around the middle of October.

Wolves: defensive progress under Peixoto

Wolves have also made a convincing start to life in the Championship under Cesar Peixoto. They have lost only once in their first seven league matches, collecting 14 points, and their response to the 4-2 defeat against West Ham has been particularly encouraging.

After a 2-2 draw at Birmingham, Wolves won 1-0 away at Sheffield United and then defeated West Brom by the same score at Molineux. Fer Lopez scored the winner in the Black Country derby, while Peixoto’s team produced a much more controlled performance without the ball.

That improvement is significant. Wolves conceded six goals across the matches against West Ham and Birmingham, but followed them with consecutive Championship clean sheets. With Andre protecting the defence and players such as Marshall Munetsi, Rodrigo Gomes, Mateus Mane and Lopez available in transition, Wolves remain capable of causing problems even when they spend long periods without possession.

However, Raul Jimenez is a major absence after suffering a knee injury in the cup game against Everton. Adam Armstrong is the natural option to lead the attack in his place. Yerson Mosquera and Rafiki Said have also been dealing with injuries and remain doubts.

Probable lineups

  • Middlesbrough: Vitek; Ayling, Phillips, Malanda; Brittain, Morris, McGree, Arfsten; Cozier-Duberry, Peart-Harris; Lankshear.
  • Wolves: Jose Sa; Trippier, Djiga, Toti Gomes, Hugo Bueno; Andre, Munetsi; Rodrigo Gomes, Fer Lopez, Mane; Armstrong.

Match facts

  • Middlesbrough are unbeaten in their last six Championship matches.
  • Boro have scored eight goals across their last three league games.
  • Wolves have lost only one of their opening seven Championship matches.
  • Wolves have kept clean sheets in their last two league fixtures.
  • Middlesbrough have 15 points from eight matches, with Wolves one point behind after seven.

Home advantage could decide a very tight contest

There is little separating these teams in terms of results. Wolves have become much harder to break down and arrive at the Riverside after consecutive league wins without conceding, so Middlesbrough should not expect the kind of open contest they had against Norwich.

The difference could come in the attacking options available to the hosts. Hellberg can use Cozier-Duberry and Peart-Harris between the lines, push Brittain and Arfsten high from the wing-back positions and still introduce Conway or Sarmiento if the first plan does not work. Wolves, meanwhile, lose an important reference point in attack without Jimenez.

This should remain competitive deep into the second half, but Middlesbrough’s home advantage, current unbeaten league run and greater attacking flexibility give them a realistic opportunity to take all three points.

Prediction: Middlesbrough to win.
