The KNVB has come down hard on a young pitch invader. A 13-year-old boy who ran onto the field during last month's Nations League clash between the Netherlands and Germany has been handed a nationwide stadium ban that will keep him away from every professional ground in the country for five years.

Details: The incident took place on September 24 at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, during the UEFA Nations League Group A2 opener between the Netherlands and Germany, which ended 1-1. The boy, who had invaded the pitch during the match, was identified by the federation and sanctioned this Friday. Alongside the five-year nationwide stadium ban, the KNVB imposed a fine of 100 euros, the standard rate applied to minors for such offences. The federation announced the punishment through an official statement on Friday.

The match in question carried extra resonance, as it marked the debut of both Xavi with the Dutch national team and Jürgen Klopp with Germany, a high-profile Amsterdam showdown that ended in a draw after Cody Gakpo's late equaliser. Pitch invasions have been a recurring headache for European football authorities in recent seasons, with several high-profile incidents at major tournaments leading to stricter security measures and harsher punishments. Dutch authorities have taken an increasingly firm line, arguing that lenient treatment of young offenders encourages copycat behaviour. The KNVB's decision is therefore intended as a deterrent: the five-year ban means the teenager will be unable to attend any professional match in the Netherlands until he is 18, and the 100-euro fine, though modest, signals that age does not exempt fans from responsibility.

It's worth noting that this is not the first time Dutch football has punished a young pitch invader so severely: a 13-year-old who ran onto the field at the Philips Stadion to take a selfie with Memphis Depay was handed an identical five-year ban back in 2021, a precedent the KNVB has clearly chosen to follow.

Reminder: Another World Cup in the USA?! Americans target another huge tournament after 2026.
