Another World Cup in the USA?! Americans target another huge tournament after 2026
The United States are apparently not done with hosting football's biggest events.
Details: According to fresh reports citing The Times, the United States have emerged as the leading option to host the 2028 Copa America. Discussions over bringing the continental tournament back to American soil are reportedly continuing, although CONMEBOL has yet to make an official announcement confirming the host country.
If the plan goes through, the United States would stage another enormous international football event just two years after co-hosting the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico. The country already has the stadium infrastructure and recent experience of organizing tournaments on a huge scale.
The situation is particularly intriguing because the 2028 Copa America would fall in the same summer as the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Organizers would therefore have to find the right calendar window, while reports suggest the Americans believe they are capable of accommodating both major sporting events.
Another idea reportedly being considered is an expansion of the Copa America from 16 to 20 national teams. However, neither the final format nor the distribution of any additional places between CONMEBOL and CONCACAF has been officially confirmed.
It is worth noting that the United States have already hosted the Copa America twice, in 2016 and 2024. The most recent edition ended with Argentina defeating Colombia 1-0 after extra time in the final in Miami Gardens, meaning a 2028 edition would become the country's third time staging the tournament.
