Borussia Dortmund: four wins from four and a defence giving opponents very little
Dortmund's league start has been almost flawless. Four victories have brought a maximum 12 points, with nine goals scored and only two conceded. It is only the fourth time in the club's history that BVB have opened a Bundesliga campaign with four consecutive wins, and the first since 2015.
The numbers are especially encouraging for a team with so much attacking quality. Kovač has been using a 3-4-2-1 structure, giving Dortmund width while still allowing several players to occupy dangerous central areas around Serhou Guirassy. The hosts do not need to attack recklessly for 90 minutes: they have shown that they can control phases of matches, wait for openings and then accelerate quickly.
There is, however, an important personnel issue in defence. Nico Schlotterbeck suffered a ligament injury to his right ankle during Germany duty and his availability against Werder is now a major doubt. The setback is particularly frustrating because the centre-back had only recently returned from another ankle problem.
Even with that complication, Dortmund's squad offers Kovač alternatives at the back, and the overall defensive record remains convincing. Conceding just twice in four league matches is an excellent platform for a side whose attacking ceiling is considerably higher than that of most Bundesliga opponents.
Werder Bremen: improved results, but Thioune has fewer options
Werder's start has been much more uneven. Daniel Thioune's side opened the Bundesliga season with a 4-1 defeat at Freiburg, but responded well: a 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig was followed by a 1-1 draw in Cologne and a 3-2 home win against Augsburg. That leaves Bremen with seven points and an 8-8 goal difference after four rounds.
That sequence deserves respect. Werder are capable of playing aggressively and causing problems when they can move the ball forward quickly. At the same time, their defensive record is difficult to ignore: they have conceded in every Bundesliga match this season, and a trip to the league leaders is a very different challenge from their previous fixtures.
Thioune also has significant selection problems. Jens Stage suffered a serious thigh injury and is not expected to return before 2027. Salim Musah then sustained a severe left-thigh injury while away with Germany U20 and has also been ruled out for several months. Justin Njinmah has at least returned to the training pitch after his own thigh problem, but his match readiness remains uncertain.
Those absences reduce Werder's depth at exactly the wrong time. Against Dortmund, Bremen will need to maintain their intensity without leaving large spaces between midfield and defence, because BVB have enough pace and technical quality to punish even short periods of disorganization.
