The hosts sit fifth, while the visitors are tenth, but only three points separate the teams.

West Bromwich have collected 14 points from eight matches. It has been a genuinely bright start: four wins, two draws and two defeats. However, James Morrison’s side suffered a 0-1 defeat to Wolverhampton before the international break, so they will surely be eager to get back to winning ways quickly. At home, the Baggies remain unbeaten, with two wins and two draws.
Birmingham have picked up 11 points and have lost just one of their eight matches. The Blues have only two wins, though, alongside five draws. Their latest game ended in a high-scoring shootout with Middlesbrough — 2-2. Before that, the Blues beat Derby 2-1 and then fell to Norwich 1-2. Interestingly, Birmingham have performed better away from home so far: two wins, one draw and one defeat.
The head-to-head record points to a fairly cagey contest. The teams could not be separated in their last two meetings: a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns in November 2025 and a goalless draw in Birmingham in February 2026. Overall, though, West Bromwich have the edge across the last 17 competitive meetings, with eight wins to Birmingham’s five.
There are also some selection concerns. Michael Johnston is a doubt for the hosts, while Nolan Galvez remains sidelined. Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Callum Styles, who previously withdrew from international duty due to minor fitness issues, are expected to recover in time for the game. Birmingham are sweating over the fitness of Mark Leonard.
In my view, West Bromwich look like slight favourites here. The Baggies are strong on home soil, sit higher in the table and will surely be keen to make amends after their derby defeat. However, this will certainly not be an easy outing: Birmingham regularly scrap for points and know how to cause problems for more established opponents. I therefore expect a closely fought game with few goals, in which the hosts are capable of getting the job done.
My prediction: both teams to score — yes.
