Wolfsburg fired their head coach. The team shows not the most encouraging results
Niko Kovač replaced Florian Kohfeldt in the coaching role in Wolfsburg two years ago and in the first season managed to secure the eighth position in the Bundesliga. However, the current results of the team can hardly be considered comforting. The team last tasted victory in official matches in mid-December, and in the last eleven matches in the top division of Germany, they have gathered a mere six points.
In yesterday's match, Wolfsburg visited Augsburg, and the visitors clinched a convincing victory with a score of 3-1. This prompted the club's management to terminate the contract with the coach, as announced on the team's official website.
Wolfsburg's Managing Director, Marcel Schaefer, commented on this development as follows:
"After the defeat to Augsburg, we have come to the decision to terminate our collaboration following an internal analysis of the game and our overall situation.
We regret this turn of events and believe that to achieve our goals, the team needs a new impetus.
We would like to thank Niko Kovac, his brother Robert, and Aaron Briggs for all the best in their personal and professional lives."
Niko Kovač himself commented on this matter:
"Of course, as the head coach, I am particularly disappointed that we did not manage to achieve a turning point despite promising approaches.
We wish the team, the entire club, and its supporters all the best for the remainder of the season and in the future."
It is worth noting that in his career, the Croatian specialist has worked with Monaco, Eintracht, and Bayern Munich. With the team from Frankfurt, he won the German Cup, then repeated this feat with the Munich team, as well as clinching the Bundesliga and the country's Super Cup.
At the moment, Wolfsburg is in fourteenth place in the standings, and the gap from the relegation zone is only six points.
