Webb calls for rule changes after tragic Awoniyi incident

In a recent match against Leicester, Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi suffered a severe abdominal injury that required immediate surgery. However, this could have been avoided if not for the current rules.
Details: At present, referees are not allowed to signal for offside immediately, letting the play continue until the phase is over. That’s exactly what happened in this match, even though it was clear that Anthony Elanga was in an offside position. Had the referee called offside right away, this tragedy might have been prevented.
PGMOL chief Howard Webb wants to bring back the previous offside ruling, and although he cannot implement this directly—as the regulations are not set by the Premier League—Football Insider reports that Webb may instruct assistant referees to raise their flag immediately in cases of obvious offside.
Reminder: Awoniyi is currently in an induced coma, as the upcoming surgery is complex and will be carried out in two stages. The coma is necessary to ensure his body doesn’t expend energy on vital functions between the two operations.
