Uganda will play Nigeria, Tunisia, and Tanzania in Group C of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025. The Cranes, led by Paul Put, qualified in spectacular manner, finishing with 13 points, just one point behind South Africa.
Since 1978, when they reached the final against Ghana, Uganda has struggled to make a deep run in AFCON, with their best recent performance coming in 2019, when they reached the Round of 16. Having missed the last two editions, they now return with renewed ambition and a strong tactical foundation under their Belgian coach.
A New Generation Ready for the Challenge
The fact that this will be many Ugandan players' first AFCON experience only heightens the excitement. "This will be their first AFCON for some of my teammates," said Captain Khalid Aucho in a motivational statement. This is your moment! Give it your all and enjoy the experience. We are proud to have you representing our nation.
Fixture List and Head-to-Head Record
Uganda’s campaign will begin against Tunisia (December 23), followed by a crucial East African derby against Tanzania (December 27), before concluding with a tough test against Nigeria (December 30).

Tunisia has always crushed Uganda, winning all previous matchups, including two AFCON finals (1962, 1978).
Uganda vs Tanzania
• Matches Played: 63

• Draws: 16
• Losses: 13

In this long-running battle, Uganda has generally prevailed. Their record versus Tanzania in the AFCON qualifiers, however, is more evenly distributed, which makes their next matchup uncertain.
Uganda vs Nigeria

• Goals For: 6
• Goals Against: 5
Unexpectedly, Uganda has a winning record against three-time champion Nigeria, including a 2-1 triumph in the AFCON 1978 semi-final. The Cranes also defeated the Super Eagles in the 2007 AFCON qualifiers.
Can Uganda Make History Again?
Uganda has the tactical discipline and resolve to contend for a knockout stage position in spite of a difficult group. While a solid showing against Tunisia or Nigeria could increase their prospects, their encounter against Tanzania could be pivotal.
With Paul Put’s experience and a squad eager to prove themselves, Uganda’s return to AFCON could be one to remember.
