On the night of Tuesday, June 25th, the seventh game of the Stanley Cup playoff finals took place. The Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers battled to determine the new champion.
The Panthers managed a narrow 2-1 victory, winning the series 4-3. Thus, the Panthers clinched their first Stanley Cup in history. However, the historic achievements for the team from Sunrise did not end there.
Florida's captain, Aleksander Barkov, became the first Finn in Stanley Cup history to lift the trophy. Until now, no representative from Finland had achieved this unique feat.
Founded in 1993, the Florida Panthers have twice been the best in the Eastern Conference but had never won the NHL championship.
Additionally, Connor McDavid became the third player in Stanley Cup playoff history to surpass 40 points, joining Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky.
It's worth noting that only one team in the history of the finals has managed to come back from a 0-3 series deficit. In 1942, the Toronto Maple Leafs accomplished this feat against Detroit to win the trophy.
