Ukraine
There’s a lot of talk about the Ukrainians in the world of volleyball; the team has spent two seasons in the Nations League and has performed very well. In the last edition, they even managed to reach the play-offs, where they lost to a strong Polish side in the quarter-finals.
Having played against the world’s strongest national teams, it’s hard to intimidate the Ukrainians. Their opening match at the European Championship was no walk in the park, but they managed to beat Israel in four sets – 25–22, 25–19, 22–25, 25–19. Their opponents proved tenacious and played excellently in defence, but Lozano’s side were simply a cut above. There should be no problems progressing from the group stage; the key matches will be against Poland and Bulgaria.
North Macedonia
North Macedonia are not a particularly well-known side, having finished a modest 16th in the last edition of the European League, with three wins from six matches. In their opening match of this tournament, the team faced the hosts and reigning world runners-up, Bulgaria, to whom they lost without much of a chance – 17:25, 19:25, 18:25.
It will be incredibly difficult to fight for a place in the knockout stages; the key here is to gain experience in matches against top-tier teams and try to give them a run for their money. North Macedonia will have matches where they can pick up points, but certainly not in this upcoming clash.
Head-to-head record
Ukraine hold a significant advantage in head-to-head encounters; the teams last met in the Golden Euroleague in 2023, when the Ukrainians won both matches by the identical score of 3–0.
Prediction
Judging by the odds, there’s no suspense in this fixture, as the Ukrainians are heavy favourites – a view I have to agree with. I reckon the best North Macedonia can hope for in a match like this is to take a single set, though I don’t even believe that will happen. I expect Lozano’s side to dominate, so I’m backing Ukraine to win with a -2.5-set handicap at 1.66.
