Southgate commented on his resignation as England coach
The past European Championship was marked by the fact that, following its results, the England national team changed its head coach for the first time in eight years. And now the silence about his resignation has been broken by its former head, Gareth Southgate.
The specialist admitted that leaving at the end of Euro 2024, where the ‘three lions’ again lost the final, was the right decision:
‘It was the right time for a change. Now you see the hope that change can bring. I'm happy with that. Eight years is a long time and I'm looking forward to the new challenge and enjoying my time off.
I read something from Tony Blair (former Prime Minister of the UK), he said that when you start you have a lot of support and less opportunity and when you finish you have a lot more opportunity but less support. I felt I was in control of the work, I knew exactly what was needed, but there was less support. We raised expectations, we needed to put English football back on the map and now we are consistently at the top.’
It begs the question: what's next? Southgate already has an answer to it:
‘I haven't had any conversations with Premier League clubs. People know I need to build up my strength and enjoy life. I'm not going to rush things and I have to make the right decisions. There are opportunities outside football that I'm also very interested in,’ Southgate told Sky Sports.
Recall that with Southgate at the helm of the England national team twice won silver medals at European Championships.
