"I'm ashamed" — Modrić makes an unexpected admission
Modrić has never felt anything like this in 20 years with Croatia.
Details: Croatia captain Luka Modrić reacted to his national team's crushing 0-7 defeat to England in the third round of UEFA Nations League A in Rijeka.
"It's hard to find an explanation for a performance like this: no duels, no fouls, no aggression, no unity... I've been here for 20 years, but for the first time I'm ashamed after a match! You can lose because right now they are simply better. But to lose like this and destroy the reputation we've built over the years is unacceptable. I'm very ashamed."
"You can't play football like this. It felt as if we were four or five players short. It was a catastrophic evening. We must not blame one another or look for culprits; we have to stay united. I've never had this feeling after a match before."
"We need to come together, because another difficult match awaits us. We have to show our true face, show that we have sporting anger and pride, desire, will and unity — things that cannot disappear overnight. Playing like this is unacceptable. Today we would have lost even to a third-division team."
"We hope the fans in Split will be with us, support us, and we will repay them in the best possible way. First of all, with fighting spirit. By remaining fighters on the pitch, as we have always been, we can repay that debt. Today's performance caused serious concern," Modrić said.
It is worth noting that Croatia's next Nations League match will be against Spain in Split on October 6.
Reminder: What a humiliation! England destroy Croatia away and rewrite history
