Yesterday, Barcelona's president, Joan Laporta, declared that the idea of creating a European Super League is not dead, and there are already several teams willing to join the tournament. He mentioned thirteen teams, aside from Barcelona and Real Madrid, ready to participate in the new competition. These included Inter, Milan, Napoli, Roma, PSV, Ajax, Porto, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Marseille, Feyenoord, Brugge, and Anderlecht, along with "any La Liga team except Atletico Madrid."

Following this, the Ajax supporters' association reached out to the club with the following message:

"Inquiries to the club show that Ajax has never discussed this with Laporta, let alone agreed to it. Ajax is utterly surprised by this unfounded statement."

The second Dutch club, Feyenoord, also chimed in with a brief statement:

"Feyenoord is very surprised by reports in international media that the club has agreed to participate in the so-called Super League. This is complete nonsense."

AS Roma prepared a more comprehensive statement, stating:

"As publicly stated shortly after the European Court's decision on the Super League, Roma reiterates that it does not support any project related to the so-called Super League. The club also declares that it has never changed its position on this matter and has not engaged in any discussions about choosing an alternative path, except through the joint work of clubs through the ECA in close partnership and cooperation with UEFA and FIFA."

It is worth noting that the Super League project gained new life in December 2023 when the European Court ruled that UEFA and FIFA unlawfully blocked it. Organizer firm A22 still faces numerous obstacles, and it is far from guaranteed that it will move forward. However, according to UEFA's regulations, it is obliged to fully and fairly consider proposals related to this or any other proposed new competition operating within its sphere.

Even after last year's court decision, Premier League clubs will automatically be prohibited from participating in unlicensed competitions, including the European Super League. The Premier League owners' decision from 2022 also prohibits clubs from participating in the creation of "new competition formats beyond the rules of the Premier League." Both measures were taken in response to the events of 2021.

Regardless of the loyalty of clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid, launching the Super League will be challenging without the support of a sufficient number of potential member clubs. Considering that some of those mentioned by Laporta immediately deny their involvement, and the concept itself continues to face widespread criticism, obtaining voluntary registration from clubs remains the greatest hurdle to its existence.
