Russo Confident Ahead of Benfica Clash: “Boca Is Boca, We’ll Go for the Win”

Miguel Ángel Russo exuded calm and confidence in his final press conference before Boca Juniors’ debut at the Club World Cup. At 69, the seasoned manager begins his third spell with the team, and his message was clear: “Boca is Boca, and we’ll try to take the win.” The statement set the tone for Boca’s crucial Group C opener against Benfica, to be played Monday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
According to Olé, Russo acknowledged the quality of his opponents — led by Ángel Di María — but emphasized Boca’s preparation. “I’m doing well, and so is the squad. We know what kind of competition this is. We’ve worked hard and we’re ready,” he said. Understanding the weight of the opening game, he added: “The first one, I always say, is the most important.”
The path ahead won’t be easy. After Benfica, Boca faces Bayern Munich and Auckland City, meaning a good start is key. “Benfica and Bayern are high-level European sides,” Russo admitted, “but we aim to compete, perform well, and win.”
Without naming his starting lineup, Russo gave a glimpse of his tactical focus: maintain order, read the game, and adapt to the opponent’s style. Still, he made a veiled remark about Auckland City, which lost 5–0 to Bayern: “Without disrespect, they come from a country that isn’t fully professional.”
He also addressed other key topics. On Edinson Cavani’s fitness, Russo said recovery was “day by day.” And he praised the arrival of Ayrton Costa, calling the signing important and applauding Boca’s management for securing the deal.
Looking ahead to the match, Russo noted that Boca’s supporters would have a role to play: “The fans will make a difference.”
