River Aim to Extend 29-Year Unbeaten Run Against Platense

River Plate will host Platense on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Torneo Apertura, and history is firmly on the home side’s bench. According to TyC Sports, River haven’t lost to Platense since a 2-1 defeat in 1996, when Esteban “Bichi” Fuertes scored twice for the Calamar in Vicente López.
The two teams did not meet again for over two decades, as Platense spent 22 seasons outside the top flight before returning to Primera in 2021. Since then, the head-to-head has been entirely one-sided: five wins and two draws in River’s favor across Copa de la Liga and league matches.
Most recently, the sides drew 1-1 at the start of 2025, but crucially, both of Platense’s points since their return came at home. This time, they travel to El Monumental, where River will look to assert their authority and book a place in the semifinals.
Platense’s last win in this fixture features an odd footnote: Marcelo Gallardo, who would later become River’s legendary coach, scored from the spot in that 1996 loss. Nearly three decades later, River once again appear in control—on the pitch and in the numbers.
