Patrick Vieira breaks silence on Ismail Jakobs’ absence from the Lions of Teranga’s latest squad

The Senegalese left-back’s absence during the last international break had sparked speculation.

Ismail Jakobs had not been called up for the first two fixtures of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers or the friendly against the Comoros. Some sources had suggested that he had decided to end his international career.

In an interview with RTS1, the head coach of the Lions of Teranga sought to play down these rumours. Patrick Vieira stated that he had spoken directly with his player. The manager states that Ismail Jakobs is expected to be present at the next camp.

“There may have been a slight communication issue between the player and myself, contrary to what people on the outside might think. When communication isn’t clear, it leaves the door open to all sorts of comments.

“I spoke to him on the phone and we had a chat. There were a few personal issues. That is why we decided to make him available to his club.

“I recently saw him play against Barcelona. So there shouldn’t be any problems on that front for the next squad call-up.”
