World champion joins Howe and Nagelsmann! Manchester United expands shortlist to replace Carrick
Manchester United continue to consider potential successors to Michael Carrick. Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann were previously named among the leading candidates, but two more high-profile managers have now been added to the shortlist.
According to The Independent journalist Miguel Delaney, the club's hierarchy are interested in Sebastian Hoeneß. The Stuttgart manager has caught United's attention with his attacking style of play and ability to develop young players.
Another option is Didier Deschamps. According to Foot Mercato, Manchester United representatives have already contacted the French manager, who left the France national team after the 2026 World Cup. He previously guided Les Bleus to victory at the 2018 World Cup, and also won the World Cup and Euro 2000 as a player.
At the same time, Carrick's position does not yet appear to be in serious jeopardy. The team have collected just seven points from their first eight league matches — the club's worst start since the 1986/87 season. However, a 3-2 win over Roma in the Champions League has lifted the mood at Old Trafford somewhat.
