League Two continues to deliver surprises.
Details: Today, the official page of Grimsby Town Football Club announced that the club has signed Derby County goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell on a 7-day emergency loan.
The situation arose after Grimsby’s keeper, Christy Pym, was sent off in their recent League Two fixture, ruling him out for the next match. It turned out there was no one available to replace him.
Grimsby do have another goalkeeper, 20-year-old Charlie Casper, but he remains the only shot-stopper available for the squad. Should he suffer an injury or get sent off, there would be no eligible backup.
This type of deal is known as an “emergency loan” and is permitted in English football in exceptional circumstances.
Richard O’Donnell joined Derby County from Blackpool this summer as a free agent. He has yet to make an appearance this season.
This Saturday, Grimsby are set for an away clash against Swindon in League Two’s 17th round, and Richard is expected to be named in the matchday squad.
Reminder: He is furious. Grimsby goalkeeper turns out to be a Manchester United fan
