Trump is absolutely thrilled with Team USA's stunning victory in ice hockey at the Winter Olympics.
Details: Today, U.S. President Donald Trump hosted the U.S. national hockey team for an honorary reception at the White House to celebrate their Olympic success.
As always, Trump welcomed his distinguished guests in the Oval Office. The meeting was warm and friendly, with players even lending Trump a gold medal so he could pose with it for photos.
Trump didn't come empty-handed either, announcing the creation of a new and highly prestigious civilian award: the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which will now be presented to American athletes for outstanding achievements and for bringing glory to the United States.
The first-ever Presidential Medal of Freedom was awarded to Team USA goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Trump explained that he chose to honor only one player, to ensure the award retains its prestige and uniqueness:
"But I just want to say, members of this incredible hockey team will be pleased to hear that, following their vote and my own…
And in this case, my vote was a little more important... that I will soon present Connor with our highest civilian award, which we will continue to award and which has been presented to many athletes over the years.
But when I say 'many,' I mean not too many—about 12 people. It’s called our nation’s highest civilian honor."
Team USA defeated Team Canada in the Olympic final in overtime, 2-1, claiming gold for the first time in 46 years.
