Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton revealed that thoughts about Italian racists made him think twice about accepting an offer to join the Ferrari team, reports The Sun.
Hamilton, who is the only black driver in F1, admitted that the thought of possible racist abuse did cross his mind, but he believed he could handle it.
"It definitely crossed my mind when I was thinking about my decision. It’s often such a small group of people that set that trend for many. I don’t think it’s going to be a problem," Hamilton stated.
It's also worth noting that the Briton is concerned about the lack of diversity at Ferrari, although in November, like all other Formula 1 teams, they signed the Diversity and Inclusion Charter. Ferrari's team principal, Fred Vasseur, stated that he strives for diversity, but professionalism always comes first for him, not other attributes.
Additionally, in 2020, Hamilton founded the Hamilton Commission, which aimed to increase the representation of black people in British motorsport. Now he intends to follow the same path in Italy.
