The tragedy unfolded in the city of Mdantsane, Eastern Cape Province: former two-weight world champion Zolani Tete was killed in an armed attack outside his own home.

Details: On Friday evening, the 38-year-old South African boxer was sitting in his car, waiting for the entrance gates to open. At that moment, two masked men exited a nearby vehicle and opened fire. Tete tried to drive into his yard to escape the hail of bullets, but suffered fatal wounds and died at the scene. A 27-year-old woman who was with him sustained severe gunshot injuries and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened a criminal case for "murder" and "attempted murder"; the attackers are currently at large and wanted by authorities.

Nicknamed "Last Born," Zolani Tete was one of the most decorated South African boxers of his era, boasting a professional record of 29 wins (22 by knockout) and 4 losses. He held the IBF super flyweight and WBO bantamweight world titles. In November 2017, Tete made history by entering the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest knockout in a world title bout: he knocked out Siboniso Gonya in just 11 seconds with his very first punch. After serving a four-year suspension, Tete was actively preparing for a comeback to the ring, scheduled for November.
