RIP. A tragedy in the boxing world: former prospect passes away at 33
The boxing world has lost a true fighter, someone who battled for his life until the very end.
Details: Former promising Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33. The tragedy was announced on social media by his father, Richard Colon, who thanked all the fans for their years of support and prayers.
Colon’s career and life were drastically changed in October 2015 during a bout against Terrel Williams. During the fight, the Puerto Rican suffered several dangerous blows to the back of the head, and after the bout ended, he lost consciousness in the locker room. At the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with a subdural hematoma and performed emergency brain surgery. Colon then spent 221 days in a coma.
Although he eventually regained consciousness, the athlete was never able to fully recover from the severe brain injury. Until his final days, Prichard was under the constant care of his family, relearning basic skills and communicating with loved ones using a special tablet.
It’s worth noting that before the tragic fight, Prichard Colon was considered one of the most promising super welterweights, having won gold at the 2010 Pan American Junior Championships and boasting an undefeated record of 16 consecutive wins.
