Unexpected decision. Senegal star set to retire from international football
Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has decided to retire from international football. According to Taggat, the 34-year-old goalkeeper has already informed the national team's future head coach, Patrick Vieira, who is expected to be officially appointed in the near future.
Mendy has made 59 appearances for the Lions and is one of the most decorated players in the history of Senegalese football. His biggest achievement with the national team came at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, when Senegal won the tournament for the first time in their history. Mendy himself was named the best goalkeeper at AFCON 2021.
At club level, Mendy worked his way from Cherbourg and Reims to Rennes before joining Chelsea in 2020. It was in London that he achieved the biggest success of his club career, winning the Champions League in the 2020/21 season. With the Blues, the goalkeeper also won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Mendy has played for Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli since 2023. The decision to retire from international football will bring an important chapter to an end for a goalkeeper who was one of Senegal's key players for many years.
