On Thursday night, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) declared that the Congo and Pakistan Football Federations had been suspended for administrative infractions, preventing their national teams and clubs from competing in international tournaments.
Congo Suspended Over Government Interference
FIFA clarified that a "serious issue related to government interference" was the reason behind the suspension of the Congo Football Federation. Sports Minister Hugues Ngouélondélé established a special committee to oversee the national football federation, which led to the problem.
The FIFA Council Bureau stated that Congo’s membership is suspended “until further notice,” meaning that the Red Devils national team and Congolese clubs will be unable to participate in international tournaments until the suspension is lifted.
Congo was scheduled to play Tanzania and Zambia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March, thus this decision comes at a crucial moment for the country. The team has lost both of its games and is now at the bottom of Group F. With Eritrea's withdrawal, Morocco has a perfect record and is at the top of the group.
Pakistan Suspended Over Electoral Law Issues
Meanwhile, Pakistan was also suspended due to its failure to revise its electoral regulations. FIFA stated that the ban would be lifted once the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) adopts the statutes submitted by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
As part of its attempts to guarantee the independence of football governance globally, FIFA has already stepped in to suspend national football federations for administrative infractions or government meddling.
