FIFA Bans Congo Over Government Interference, Shattering World Cup Hopes

Because of government meddling, FIFA has suspended the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT). Congo will be barred from all international football competitions, including the 2026 World Cup qualifying tournaments, as a result of this ruling, which takes effect immediately.
Why Was Congo Suspended?
The suspension follows the Congolese government’s decision to set up a special committee to run FECOFOOT, which violates FIFA’s rules on independent football governance. FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) sent two missions to Brazzaville before taking action.
FIFA’s Conditions for Lifting the Ban
FIFA has outlined several demands, including:
- Returning full control of FECOFOOT’s offices and facilities to its elected officials.
- Restoring control of the federation’s bank accounts to its recognized administrators.
- Cancelling any decisions that allow an external committee to run FECOFOOT.
- Ensuring the federation operates without political interference.
What’s Next for Congo?
FIFA has been contacted by Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso to explore a solution. In Brazzaville, a crisis conference has been planned. Congo will stay suspended and its clubs and national team will not be allowed to compete internationally if the government does not comply with FIFA's conditions.
