Drama Builds Across PSL: Sundowns Rule the League as CAF Final Looms

Mamelodi Sundowns have once again asserted their dominance, lifting their eighth consecutive Premiership title with a 2–0 win over Magesi.
Their campaign was marked by record-breaking consistency, leaving only Orlando Pirates able to keep pace — though they too fell short, settling for second place for the third straight season under now-departed coach José Riveiro.
CAF Champions League Final Awaits Sundowns
The South African champions now turn their focus to continental glory. They host Egypt's Pyramids FC in Saturday's CAF Champions League final first leg at Loftus Versfeld. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams stressed the importance of adding a second star:
“It would be the most important achievement. It would make millions happy.”
After eliminating Al Ahly on away goals, the Brazilians are seen as favourites against a Pyramids side making their final debut.
CAF Confederation Cup Race Goes to the Wire
While the top two are sealed, third place — and a Confederation Cup spot — remains open. Stellenbosch (47 pts) lead the way, just one ahead of Sekhukhune United before their final matches against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows, respectively.
Both opponents are fighting relegation, with City (26 pts) sitting 15th, one behind Arrows, who have two games in hand. Tensions rise as City risk a playoff spot — a major fall for a club of their stature.
PSL Sanctions Loom After Abandoned Match
Controversy surrounds SuperSport United, who failed to provide a backup generator during load shedding, forcing a match abandonment. A 3–0 walkover in Arrows’ favour is on the table, which could shift both relegation and top-eight dynamics.
MTN8 Spots Still Up for Grabs
Three spots in the MTN8 remain unclaimed. With Chippa United (31 pts) done for the season, Kaizer Chiefs, Gallants, Richards Bay, Magesi, and Arrows still have hope. Chiefs, especially, face pressure to qualify after a 10-year trophy drought ended with their Nedbank Cup win.
But coach Nasreddine Nabi needs a victory over Polokwane City to stay in the hunt — and possibly keep his job.
PSL Awards Postponed Amid Sundowns Commitments
The PSL awards ceremony has been postponed, with Sundowns’ Club World Cup participation cited as the reason.
The delay adds excitement to the race for Footballer of the Season, with Lucas Ribeiro (Golden Boot winner) and Relebohile Mofokeng leading the race.
