World No. 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner tested positive for doping twice in March of this year.
The issue arose during the ATP tournament in Indian Wells when Sinner's test detected a low level of clostebol metabolite, a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass. A subsequent test, taken eight days later, also revealed a low level of the metabolite.
However, Sinner managed to avoid disqualification. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) conducted an investigation and determined that the Italian did not intentionally ingest the substance.
It turned out to be a bizarre accident. Sinner's physiotherapist had used a spray containing the substance to treat a cut on his own finger, which inadvertently led to the substance entering Sinner's body.
As a result, Sinner will lose the ranking points he earned in Indian Wells, where he reached the semifinals.
