Atlético Mineiro has rejected a $2 million offer from UAE side Shabab Al-Ahli for striker João Marcelo, according to No Ataque. The bid, presented by the player's agent Alex Fabiano during a meeting with CSO Paulo Bracks at Arena MRV, involved acquiring 50% of the player's economic rights. Atlético currently holds 70% of those rights, while João Marcelo owns 20% and former club Guarani retains the remaining 10%.
Despite the offer being over three times the R$ 3 million paid to Guarani in March, Atlético believes the 20-year-old’s value will grow with time and more playing opportunities. The club sees him as a long-term asset and has no immediate plans to sell.
João Marcelo has featured in just eight matches under coach Cuca and is yet to record a goal or assist. However, his contract runs until December 2029, one of the longest in the squad. He faces competition from veterans like Hulk, Rony, and Isaac for minutes up front.
The player’s camp remains optimistic. They believe João Marcelo has the talent to become a top striker in Brazil and a fan favorite at Atlético. For now, the club is holding firm, confident that patience will yield a far greater return in the near future.
