The Sauber team has confirmed that Gabriel Bortoleto was unharmed following a horrific crash during the sprint race at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The incident unfolded on the final lap at Interlagos, as the Brazilian driver was battling Williams’ Alex Albon for 10th place.
Bortoleto lost control at a blistering 339 km/h, slamming twice—first into the concrete pit-lane wall, then into the barriers on the outside of the track. After the crash, the 21-year-old Brazilian was taken to the medical center for precautionary checks.
According to PlanetF1, the DRS system on the Sauber was activated just before the incident, which technical experts believe caused the loss of control. It’s worth noting the race was also temporarily halted with red flags after a mass shunt involving Piastri, Hülkenberg, and Colapinto.
It’s also worth adding that Bortoleto did not participate in qualifying for tomorrow’s race, as the team was unable to repair his car in time. However, stewards have granted him permission to take part in the race.
