Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has proposed that FIFA introduce a new interpretation of the offside law, and the idea is now set to be tested in practice.
Details: As reported by The Touchline, Wenger’s proposal has been approved and will be implemented in the Canadian Premier League. The league will therefore operate under a revised offside principle.
Under the new interpretation, an attacker will only be deemed offside if he has completely moved beyond the last defender. Decisions will no longer be based on the position of individual body parts.
If the trial proves successful, the updated rule could be introduced in other competitions as well.
The new Canadian Premier League season kicks off in a month’s time, on April 4, with a clash between Forge FC and Atlético Ottawa. The latter enter the campaign as the reigning champions.
Reminder: The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place this summer, and the countdown to the global tournament is gathering pace. Several new rules are expected to be in force at the competition.
