Wrexham vs Middlesbrough: the Welsh side will test one of the Championship favorites
On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Wrexham will host Middlesbrough in the Championship. For the hosts, this is an opportunity to test themselves against a serious opponent and improve their position in the table, while the visitors will arrive in Wales with more ambitious objectives. Still, Boro should not expect an easy outing here: the Welsh side are capable of causing problems for virtually any opponent on home soil.
Team form and league position
Let’s start with the hosts. Wrexham have endured a rather inconsistent season so far. After 12 matches, Phil Parkinson’s team have collected 14 points and sit 18th in the league table. The Welsh side have three wins, five draws and four defeats to their name. Their goal difference is 15:19.
Their recent results also offer little evidence of consistency. Wrexham beat Southampton (2-1), drew with Derby (1-1), then lost to West Bromwich Albion (1-2), but bounced back with a resounding 4-1 victory over Preston. However, in their most recent match, the Welsh side were beaten 2-0 by Blackburn.
The team’s main problem is defensive solidity. Wrexham occasionally produce some decent football going forward, but they allow opponents to create dangerous chances far too often. Against the league leaders, such profligacy could prove costly.

Middlesbrough have entirely different objectives. The team sit top of the table with 28 points after 13 rounds. Seven wins, four draws and just one defeat represent an impressive record. The visitors have also scored 27 goals already, underlining their considerable attacking potential.
Boro have gone unbeaten in their last five league matches. Their 5-1 away demolition of Bolton is particularly impressive. Before that, the team drew with Cardiff (2-2), beat Stoke City (3-2) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (1-0), and shared the points with Birmingham City (2-2).
That means the visitors are heading to Wales in excellent spirits and are deservedly regarded as the favorites.
Head-to-head record
Several intriguing storylines have already emerged between these teams. Neither side managed to claim victory in their last two Championship meetings: in October 2025, the match in Middlesbrough ended 1-1, while in May 2026 the teams played out a 2-2 draw at Wrexham.
However, the rivals also met in the League Cup in August this year. Middlesbrough came out on top that time, winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Will Lankshear.
Wrexham will therefore surely have extra motivation to exact revenge. Especially since their previous two league meetings showed that the Welsh side are capable of going toe-to-toe with this opponent.
Who should you watch?
For Wrexham, Kieffer Moore is the first player to highlight. The experienced striker remains a key figure in the Welsh side’s attack. His physical strength, aerial ability and knack for making difficult passes stick could cause plenty of problems for the visitors’ central defenders.
Callum O’Hare is another player worth watching. The hosts may look to him to orchestrate their attacks and find space between the lines. Sam Smith should not be overlooked either, as he is capable of supporting Moore in the final third.
For Middlesbrough, Will Lankshear has been one of the main stars of the season. The striker has already scored important goals, including a brace in the cup meeting with Wrexham. He also leads the team’s Championship scoring charts.
Riley McGree also deserves special attention. The Australian has excellent vision, can unlock defenses with his passing and finish attacks himself. Tommy Conway gives the visitors additional mobility and more options in the final third.
On paper, the visitors’ advantage looks fairly clear. Middlesbrough lead the Championship, score regularly and have shown far greater consistency. In addition, the team have already beaten the Welsh side this season, albeit in a different competition.
But I would not write Wrexham off entirely.
Home support, Kieffer Moore’s physical presence and the desire to make amends after the defeat to Blackburn could help the hosts make this a contest. Especially since the Welsh side have avoided defeat against this opponent in their last two Championship meetings.
Nevertheless, I believe Middlesbrough’s quality and current form should prove decisive. If the visitors quickly take control of midfield, the hosts will face serious problems. At the same time, Wrexham are unlikely to sit completely deep, so both teams should create chances.
Wrexham are playing at home and could capitalize on individual defensive errors from the league leaders, but containing the visitors’ attacking potential throughout the match will be a difficult task.
My prediction: Middlesbrough to win.
