Kovač's side expected to make a convincing Bundesliga start
Dortmund enjoyed a busy pre-season campaign, during which it was clear that Niko Kovač's team were gradually finding their rhythm. Their preparations began with a win over Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, followed by a defeat to Fortuna Düsseldorf.
On their tour of Japan, Borussia first lost 1-0 to Cerezo Osaka before edging past FC Tokyo. The end of the summer was much more convincing: the team beat Arsenal 3-2 and then drew 2-2 with Roma, coming from two goals down after conceding twice early on.
An important factor in their preparations was the return of the players who had featured at the World Cup, allowing Kovač to work with an almost full-strength squad. This was reflected in the results: in the second half of pre-season, Dortmund's play became more organised and intense, with the team improving both in attack and in their pressing.
The club significantly reshaped its midfield over the summer. Dortmund signed Joey Veerman from PSV on a five-year contract until 2031, while also bringing in Giannis Konstantelias from PAOK and Konstantinos Karetsas from Genk. In addition, Kovač's side finished pre-season strongly and look ready for the start of the campaign. Hamburg can cause the hosts problems thanks to their good physical condition and confidence following their victory over Verl, but the difference in class should ultimately tell. My prediction is a Borussia Dortmund win with a -1 handicap.
