The Rafael Leão transfer saga may be approaching its most dramatic moment. Galatasaray believe they have seized control of the race, although Aston Villa still have a narrow window to change the picture.

Details: CentroGoals, relaying @Plettigoal, reports that Galatasaray have an agreement in place with Leão and expect him in Istanbul as early as Saturday. The report says Aston Villa could still disrupt the move only with a fresh late offer.

This is the latest sharp turn in one of the summer's most closely watched transfer battles. Galatasaray have been working for days to convince the Portugal international that Istanbul offers the right next chapter, while Aston Villa have tried to bring the 27 year old to the Premier League. Reports this week indicated that Milan had received serious interest from both clubs, with the Turkish side pushing a permanent deal and Villa exploring their own route to an agreement. The situation at Milan has made an exit increasingly realistic. Ruben Amorim said on Thursday that Leão may be better off moving on, despite describing the winger as a footballer capable of playing for any side in the world with the right mindset. The Portuguese forward was also left out of the Rossoneri squad for Friday's Serie A meeting with Venezia, a decision that added fresh fuel to the rumours surrounding his future. Galatasaray's confidence should not yet be mistaken for an official announcement. No club has confirmed the transfer, and the report itself leaves Aston Villa a possible route back into the race. Still, a trip to Istanbul would be a significant sign that the Turkish champions have turned their long pursuit into the leading option. The final hours of the window could now decide whether Leão heads for the Süper Lig or receives one last compelling proposal from England.

It's worth noting that Leão remains under contract with Milan until June 2028. Since joining the Rossoneri from Lille in 2019, he has made 291 appearances, scored 80 goals, supplied 61 assists and helped the club win the 2021/22 Serie A title.
