Rennes — Strasbourg: can the visitors stop the slide?
On Sunday, October 25, Rennes will host Strasbourg in the eighth round of the French Ligue 1. On paper, the advantage belongs to the home side, who sit in the upper part of the table and have looked sharp in attack. But there is a catch: the team have been conceding far too often lately, while the visitors, despite their run of poor results, are quite capable of taking advantage of their opponents' problems.
After seven rounds, Rennes sit sixth with 13 points, while Strasbourg are 14th with seven points. The difference is significant, but the Breton side certainly cannot afford to relax. Both teams are capable of creating chances, although neither has looked entirely convincing defensively so far.
Rennes: the attack is there, but consistency is still lacking
Franck Haise's side head into the match after a difficult spell. In the previous league round, Rennes lost 4-3 to Paris, despite scoring three times and having every reason to hope for a better result. Before that, the Bretons thrashed Auxerre 4-1, showing just how dangerous they can be when the game unfolds in their favour.
In the Europa League, the team also endured a nervy finish: away to Juventus, Rennes led 2-1 but eventually drew 2-2. On the one hand, such a result against a strong opponent can be considered respectable. On the other, yet another surrendered lead underlines the team's problem with defensive concentration.
After seven rounds, Rennes have scored 15 goals — one of the best records in the league. But the 14 goals conceded are far less impressive. The team push forward aggressively, look to move the ball quickly into dangerous areas and create pressure through the movement of their attacking players. At the same time, the space behind the defenders often becomes a gift for opponents.

Particular attention should be paid to Esteban Lepaul, who has already emerged as one of the team's main sources of goals. However, his involvement in the upcoming match is in doubt because of an ankle problem. If the forward is unable to play, the hosts will have to find other ways to compensate for the loss of an important player. Among those capable of adding a cutting edge in attack are Moussa Al-Tamari and Boulaye Dia.
Rennes also have a major trump card — home advantage. On their own turf, the team play with greater confidence and can impose a high tempo on their opponents. However, after a demanding European match, managing their energy will be crucial: if the hosts start too aggressively, they could struggle to maintain their intensity in the second half.
Strasbourg: it is time to end the unpleasant run
The visitors are in a less comfortable situation. After a promising start to the campaign, Strasbourg have noticeably lost momentum and slipped into the lower half of the table. In their last three Ligue 1 matches, the team have suffered three defeats, conceding at least twice on each occasion.
In the previous round, the Alsace side lost 3-1 at home to Paris Saint-Germain. Before that, they were beaten 2-1 by Nice and Paris, respectively. In other words, Strasbourg regularly find a way to score, but their defence has so far been unable to withstand the pressure from their opponents.
The team have conceded 15 goals in seven rounds — more than Rennes. For a side hoping to stay clear of the danger zone, that is a worrying statistic. Away from home in particular, mistakes during the transition from attack to defence have proved costly.
Even so, Strasbourg should not be written off entirely. The team know how to start matches on the front foot, move the ball quickly into the final third and exploit open spaces. A meeting with Rennes, who themselves regularly make mistakes at the back, could be the perfect opportunity for a reset.
One player worth watching will be Giovanni Reyna. He scored Strasbourg's only goal against PSG. His movement between the lines and ability to find pockets of space could become a key weapon for the visitors.
However, much will depend on how effectively the team perform their defensive duties and whether they can avoid their familiar lapses.
Head-to-head record and a possible scenario
Historically, Rennes have played Strasbourg with considerable confidence at home. The Bretons have not lost to the Alsace side in six consecutive home meetings, while the visitors' last victory in this fixture at Rennes came in 2018.
That said, the statistics from previous years do not guarantee the hosts an easy afternoon. Both teams are currently experiencing defensive problems, so much will depend on their finishing. Rennes will surely look to seize the initiative and make the most of home advantage, while Strasbourg may rely on quick counterattacks and mistakes from their opponents.
The key question is whether the hosts can maintain their concentration after an intense European match. If Rennes once again allow their opponents to create regular danger around their goal, the visitors will have a genuine chance of picking up points.
Based on the current league standings and home form, Rennes look the stronger side. They score plenty of goals, create chances and are capable of exploiting the uncertainty in their opponents' defence. But the goals conceded and fatigue after the meeting with Juventus mean a home win cannot be considered a certainty.
My main pick is a Rennes win.
