Ronaldo furious! His 982nd goal taken away!
Cristiano Ronaldo's pursuit of 1,000 career goals has taken an unexpected and controversial turn.
Details: According to Opta's match statistics, Ronaldo's apparent 982nd career goal has been reclassified as an own goal by Al Faisaly defender Andrei Girotto. The incident occurred during Al Nassr's 3-1 victory in the Saudi Pro League on October 23, leaving the Portuguese superstar on 981 career goals according to the statistics provider.
The controversial moment came in the 49th minute. João Félix delivered a free kick into the penalty area, where Ronaldo connected with a header. However, the ball struck Girotto and changed direction before entering the net.
Opta ruled that the decisive touch belonged to the defender and credited him with an own goal. Other statistical platforms, including SofaScore and FotMob, also classified the incident as an own goal.
It is worth noting that Ronaldo is now 19 goals away from the historic 1,000-goal milestone according to Opta's tally. Under the Saudi Pro League's current classification, he remains on 982 career goals and needs just 18 more.
