Olympiacos vs Bayer: prediction, head-to-head and probable line-ups – 18 February 2026
One of the first matches of the Champions League playoff knockout round will take place on Wednesday at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, where local club Olympiacos will host Bayer Leverkusen. The Greek side will look to prove their reputation as a formidable home team, while the Germans are determined to avenge their recent defeat on this very pitch. Here’s my take on the likely outcome of this clash.
Match preview
Olympiacos approach this game in less than ideal spirits: in the Greek league, they lost to Panathinaikos (0-1), and then failed to break down Levadiakos’ defense (0-0). Across their last four matches in all competitions, they’ve managed just one win, and their attacking line has struggled to impress. Nevertheless, in Piraeus the Red and Whites are traditionally aggressive – high pressing and midfield density have already brought them success in a direct clash with Bayer (2-0 in the group stage).
Olympiacos’ main trump card remains their defense. In their last eight matches, they have conceded more than once only on a single occasion, and have kept five clean sheets – a stat that’s particularly valuable in two-legged ties. In addition, José Luis Mendilibar has no new injury concerns, and winter signings André Luis and Clayton have added attacking variety.
Bayer, meanwhile, have bounced back strongly after a January slump. Their last defeat came against Olympiacos (0-2), but since then they have put together a six-match unbeaten run in domestic competitions – five wins and a draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach (1-1). Most of those victories were convincing, either by multiple goals or with clean sheets of their own.
Kasper Hjulmand has gradually stabilized the midfield, and the return of Palacios and Maza has boosted their control of the tempo. True, Flekken and Tella remain unavailable, and Ben Seghir has yet to fully adapt, but structurally the “Pharmacists” look far more organized than a month ago. Trips to Greece have historically been tough for them – two defeats with an aggregate score of 2-8 – but this time, the team is clearly ready for payback.
Probable line-ups
- Olympiacos: Tzolakis, Ortega, Pirola, Retsos, Costa, Esse, Muzakiitis, Martins, Chiquinho, Rodinei, El Kaabi
- Bayer: Blaswich, Quansah, Andrich, Tapsoba, Garcia, Palacios, Vasquez, Grimaldo, Maza, Poku, Schick
Match facts and head-to-head
- In their most recent head-to-head in Piraeus, Olympiacos defeated Bayer 2-0, despite the Germans having the upper hand in play.
- Olympiacos have conceded more than once in just one of their last eight matches in all competitions.
- Bayer are unbeaten in six consecutive matches, with five wins since their January loss to the Greeks.
Prediction
The first leg promises to be a cautious and tactically disciplined affair. Olympiacos at home will again focus on pressure and compactness, but this Bayer side is far more resilient against pressing and more clinical in front of goal. A draw or a narrow home win looks the most likely outcome.
