ZED and ASAS will meet on Sunday, 6 September, in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup qualifying tie. The match will be played in Egypt, with kick-off at 19:00 CET. I am backing a winner in this game.

ZED are entering their fourth full season at the top level of Egyptian football and have made a fairly solid start to the 2026/27 league campaign. On the opening matchday, the team drew 0-0 away to Wadi Degla. It was a cautious encounter: ZED were unable to make the most of their attacking opportunities, but remained defensively solid and began the season with a point.
Things got worse for the team in the second round. ZED hosted one of the leading favourites in Egyptian football, Al Ahly, and lost 2-0. As a result, after two matches the team had just one point and had yet to score. For a side hoping to build on a successful previous season, such a start was not particularly convincing.
However, ahead of their Confederation Cup debut, ZED received a much-needed confidence boost. On 1 September, the team travelled to El Geish and secured a 1-0 victory. The win not only brought ZED their first three points of the league campaign, but also their first goal of the new season.
ZED qualified for the Confederation Cup through their run in the Egyptian Cup. In the final, the team faced Pyramids and lost 2-1, but reaching the decisive match was enough to secure a place in continental competition. The Egyptian Football Association officially included ZED among the country's representatives in the Confederation Cup alongside Al Ahly. This will be ZED's debut in continental club competition, so the experience factor is clearly not on the hosts' side.
ASAS approach their clash with ZED from a completely different position. The Djibouti club finished second in the previous league season, collecting 32 points from 17 matches. The team won nine games, drew five and suffered just three defeats. That record confirms that ASAS are one of the strongest sides in Djibouti domestically.
At the same time, it is harder to assess ASAS' current form than ZED's. The 2025/26 Djibouti championship ended in the summer, while the new season had yet to begin ahead of the September fixture. As a result, the team are travelling to Egypt without the same number of competitive matches under their belt as ZED.
ASAS' place in the Confederation Cup is a result of their domestic campaign and their status as one of Djibouti's leading clubs. Last season, the team challenged for top spot for much of the campaign before finishing second. ASAS will now have the chance to test themselves against a side from a significantly stronger Egyptian league. In addition, the club gained experience in African competitions last season, meaning participation in the qualifying rounds will not be an entirely new challenge.
What to bet on?
ZED look like clear favourites for the first leg. The Egyptian side have home advantage, are in competitive rhythm thanks to the start of the domestic league and have just recorded their first win of the season. ZED have also shown defensive solidity: they have conceded just two goals in three league matches and have kept two clean sheets. ASAS can cause problems with their organised approach and international experience, but the difference in the quality of the two leagues should ultimately tell. I am backing the Egyptians to win with a -2.5 goal handicap.
