On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Porto will host Napoli at the Estádio do Dragão in the fourth round of the UEFA Champions League league phase. The Portuguese giants have made a flawless start to their domestic campaign but remain without a point in Europe. Napoli, meanwhile, have collected just three points and arrive in Portugal dealing with a growing injury crisis. Both teams desperately need a positive result to improve their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.

Porto: Domestic dominance has not translated into European success

Francesco Farioli's side have been virtually unstoppable in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Porto have won all ten of their opening league matches, scoring 25 goals and conceding only four. Their latest performance was particularly convincing, as the Dragons demolished Estoril 4-0 on October 31, with Victor Froholdt, Borja Sainz, André Silva and Gabri Veiga all finding the net.

However, their Champions League campaign tells a completely different story. Porto have lost all three league-phase matches, suffering defeats against Manchester City (0-2), Real Betis (2-3) and PSV Eindhoven (0-1). With just two goals scored and six conceded, the Portuguese club sit 34th in the 36-team standings.

Particularly concerning is their inability to score at home in Europe. Porto failed to find the net against both Manchester City and PSV, despite usually playing much more confidently at the Estádio do Dragão.

Nevertheless, Farioli has plenty of attacking options. Gabri Veiga provides creativity between the lines, Froholdt contributes energy and movement from midfield, while Pepê and Borja Sainz can stretch opposing defenses. André Silva also arrives in good form after scoring against Estoril.

Porto cannot afford another European setback. Their strong domestic performances suggest they have the quality to compete, but they must finally translate that confidence into Champions League results.

Napoli: An important European victory followed by another setback

Napoli have also endured a difficult start to their Champions League campaign. Massimiliano Allegri's team opened the competition with a 0-1 home defeat against Arsenal before losing 1-3 away to Villarreal.

Their fortunes improved in the third round, when Napoli defeated Bodø/Glimt 4-3 in an entertaining encounter. That victory brought their first three points of the league phase, leaving them 22nd in the standings with five goals scored and seven conceded.

However, the Italian club's domestic performances remain inconsistent. Napoli suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Juventus on November 1, struggling to create enough clear opportunities and losing further important players to injuries.

The biggest concern for Allegri is the squad's physical condition. Captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Mathías Olivera are unavailable, while Stanislav Lobotka, David Neres, Leonardo Spinazzola, Benoît Badiashile and Alisson Santos are also sidelined. Kevin De Bruyne remains a fitness doubt following an ankle injury, while Rasmus Højlund has been recovering from illness.

These absences significantly complicate Napoli's defensive organization and attacking combinations. Scott McTominay and Frank Anguissa will have to assume greater responsibility in midfield, while Matteo Politano and Noa Lang could become particularly important in transition.

Napoli's away record in the Champions League is another worrying factor. The Italians have failed to win any of their last seven away matches in the competition, recording one draw and six defeats.

Probable lineups

  • Porto: Diogo Costa; Alberto Costa, Bednarek, Kiwior, Martim Fernandes; Rosario, Gabri Veiga, Froholdt; Pepê, André Silva, Borja Sainz.
  • Napoli: Meret; Beukema, Rafa Marín, Rrahmani; Anguissa, Gilmour, McTominay, Vergara; Politano, Højlund, Lang.

Højlund's participation remains uncertain, with Lorenzo Lucca an alternative in attack.

Match facts and head-to-head statistics

  • Porto have won all ten of their Portuguese league matches this season.
  • Porto have lost all three Champions League fixtures, scoring twice and conceding six goals.
  • Napoli have scored five goals and conceded seven in their three Champions League matches.
  • Napoli are winless in their last seven away Champions League games.
  • Porto have not beaten an Italian club in their last six European encounters, recording three draws and three defeats.
  • The teams last met in the 2013/14 Europa League round of 16, when Porto progressed 3-2 on aggregate.

Both teams have defensive vulnerabilities: Porto vs Napoli prediction

This encounter brings together two sides with considerable attacking potential but serious problems in European competition.

Porto should approach the match aggressively, encouraged by their outstanding domestic form and the support of their home crowd. Farioli's team will look to control possession, press high and exploit Napoli's weakened defensive structure.

Napoli, however, remain dangerous even with several important players unavailable. McTominay's movement into the penalty area, Politano's creativity and Lang's pace could create opportunities against a Porto defense that has already conceded six goals in three European matches.

The Dragons have yet to score at home in this Champions League campaign, but Napoli's defensive absences present an excellent opportunity to end that drought. At the same time, the Italians scored four goals against Bodø/Glimt in their previous European fixture and possess enough attacking quality to punish Porto's mistakes.

With both teams under pressure to collect points, neither side can afford to remain passive throughout the match. I expect a competitive encounter with chances at both ends, making the goals market more appealing than choosing a winner.
