AEK – Real Madrid: can the Athens club stop the Madrid machine?
On November 4, 2026, AEK will host Real Madrid in the fourth round of the Champions League league phase. At first glance, the favorite is obvious, but the Greek club has several arguments that make it impossible to write them off in advance. Especially with the match being played in Athens, where the home supporters know how to create a truly electric atmosphere.
The teams come into the encounter with completely different European records. Real Madrid have won all three of their opening matches and collected nine points, while AEK, after beating LASK, suffered two painful defeats. Still, the backing of the home crowd could provide the Greeks with an additional boost.
Team form and league-table positions
AEK began their European campaign with a 1-0 home win over LASK. It seemed that Marco Nikolic's side could challenge for a place in the middle of the table, but the level of opposition then increased considerably. First, the Greeks lost 3-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk, before conceding five goals against Manchester City in a 5-1 defeat.
As a result, after three rounds, the Athens side have three points and a negative goal difference of 3:8. Their defense is particularly concerning: against high-level opponents, AEK have so far struggled to maintain the necessary compactness. At home, however, the team looks much more confident and can cause problems even for more prestigious opponents.
The situation in Madrid is almost the exact opposite. Real Madrid have won all three league-phase matches: they first defeated Inter 2-1, then claimed a high-scoring 4-3 away win over Roma, before thrashing RB Leipzig 4-1 in the third round. Nine points and fourth place in the table represent an excellent start for a team that traditionally sets the highest possible targets.
The Spaniards' attacking output also deserves special mention. They have scored ten goals in three matches, finding the net both at home and away. However, the game against Roma showed that even with a clear advantage in quality, Madrid can make serious defensive mistakes.
Head-to-head history
Remarkably, these clubs already have a fairly interesting European history. They have met four times in total, with one win for each team and two draws.
Most notably, AEK have yet to lose to Real Madrid on home soil. In October 2002, the teams played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in Athens. The return match in Madrid also ended level, 2-2.
Earlier, in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup, the Madrid side eliminated the Greeks 5-1 on aggregate. So, while the historical advantage remains with the Spanish club, Madrid have traditionally found it difficult in Athens.
Players to watch
AEK: the hosts' main attacking hope is Barnabas Varga. The Hungarian forward has already scored twice in the opening three Champions League matches. Razvan Marin also deserves attention, as he is responsible for progressing the ball and creating chances. In the first three games, he created 11 scoring opportunities and found the net twice.
There is also a separate storyline involving Luka Jovic. The Serbian striker is well known to Madrid supporters, having played for Real Madrid from 2019 to 2022. Now he has the chance to remind everyone of his qualities in the colors of the Greek club.
Real Madrid: Kylian Mbappe is the biggest threat to the AEK defense. The Frenchman is in excellent form and has scored in each of his last five Champions League matches. His pace, ability to run in behind the defense and composure in front of goal could become a major headache for the hosts.
Jude Bellingham should not be overlooked either. The Englishman has already made 59 appearances in Europe's premier club competition and could become the youngest player in history to reach 60 games. Arda Guler and Vinicius Junior also play important roles in the creative phase. Madrid have plenty of players capable of deciding a match through individual brilliance.
Tactics and projected lineups
Marco Nikolic will most likely have to rely on discipline and a compact defensive structure. AEK are unlikely to want to compete with Madrid in an open game for all 90 minutes. A 4-4-2 formation with two strikers, quick transitions from defense to attack and attempts to exploit space out wide looks like the more logical approach.
The Greek starting lineup could feature Brignoli, Rota, Mukudi, Relvas, Pilios, Marin, Arriaga, Joao Mario, Mager, Varga and Jovic.
Real Madrid have far more options when it comes to their tactical setup. The Madrid side can control possession, stretch the opposition's defense and create danger through the individual quality of their attacking players. The likely formation is a 4-2-3-1, with Mbappe leading the line while Vinicius, Bellingham and Guler operate between the lines.
The visitors' projected lineup: Courtois, Valverde, Rudiger, Huijsen, Carreras, Camavinga, Bernardo Silva, Vinicius, Bellingham, Guler and Mbappe. These are projected options, not confirmed starting lineups.

The main question is how long the hosts will be able to contain the Spanish club's attacking potential. AEK will certainly receive passionate support from the stands and look to make the most of home advantage. But considering how the team performed against Shakhtar and Manchester City, there is not much reason for serious optimism.
Real Madrid look far more consistent at the moment, have a stronger squad and know how to punish opponents for the slightest mistakes. At the same time, Madrid must not overlook AEK's home record against Spanish clubs: historically, the Athens side have shown that they can cause surprises.
I expect the visitors to enjoy more possession, apply pressure and gradually find gaps in the opposition's defense. The Greeks can also count on creating chances of their own, especially if they manage to make the most of counterattacks.
My prediction: over 3.5 total goals.
