On Thursday, August 27, the second leg of the Conference League play-off qualification between Hradec Králové and Panathinaikos will take place at FINEP Arena. The first match in Athens ended in a surprising 2-2 draw: the Greek club were two goals up as late as the 89th minute, but a brace from 19-year-old Abdullahi Umar turned the tie on its head. Now, everything will be decided in the Czech Republic, with the winner earning a spot in the main stage of the tournament.

Hradec Králové: two goals in seven minutes put the Czechs back in contention

David Horejš's side pulled off a minor miracle in Athens. For most of the first leg, Hradec Králové were second best in terms of quality chances created. Panathinaikos enjoyed 57% possession and fired nine shots on target compared to just two from the Czech team. After Andreas Tetteh's brace in the 55th and 61st minutes, it seemed the Greeks had already taken a huge step toward the next round.

But the closing stages completely changed the mood ahead of the return leg. Substitute Abdullahi Umar first found the net in the 89th minute, then scored again at 90+6. Notably, the first goal was the young Nigerian's debut strike in an official match for Hradec Králové's senior team. Head coach David Horejš singled out the striker's form and the impact of his substitutions after the match.

At home, the Czech club has already shown in this European campaign that they can trouble the favorites. After a 1-0 win in Norway, Hradec Králové beat Tromsø 3-1 on home soil, and in the Europa League third qualifying round, they narrowly lost twice to Beşiktaş — both times 0-1. In the Czech league, the team also started the season with home wins over Pardubice and Baník, both by a 2-1 scoreline.

An additional advantage — the schedule. The league game against Viktoria Plzeň scheduled for August 23 was postponed at the club's request, so the hosts had a full week to recover and prepare between the two legs against Panathinaikos.

According to the latest squad information, Tomáš Wiesner and Tomáš Petrášek remain sidelined for Hradec Králové due to injury.

Panathinaikos: the 2-2 result doesn't reflect the first-leg performance

For Jakob Neestrup's side, the Athens result should be seen as a major missed opportunity. Panathinaikos not only created far more chances, but also managed to convert that dominance into a two-goal lead after the break. Andreas Tetteh was particularly impressive, netting twice in six minutes.

The main problem for the Greeks arose right at the death. The team lost concentration, allowed their opponents to halve the deficit, and then conceded from a set piece in virtually the final attack. With a 9:2 advantage in shots on target, the final 2-2 scoreline flatters Hradec Králové compared to the actual balance of play.

Still, this European campaign has already taught the Athenians how to get results on the road. In the second qualifying round, Panathinaikos beat Paksi in Hungary 2-1 and advanced 4-3 on aggregate. Then, after a 1-1 home draw with CSKA 1948, they snatched a 2-1 win in Sofia after extra time. In all five matches of this Conference League qualification, the team has found the net.

The visitors also boast a much deeper squad. The first leg starting XI featured Iñaki Peña, Stefan de Vrij, Rick van Drongelen, Pedro Chirivella, Vicente Taborda, Levi Garcia, and Tetteh, while Cyril Dessers and Facundo Pellistri came off the bench. Triantafyllos Tsapras was substituted as early as the 24th minute; as of now, there is no confirmed information on his availability for the second leg.

Probable lineups

  • Hradec Králové: Zadražil — Uhrinčat, Čihák, Čech — Ludvíček, Darida, Dančák, Horák — van Buren, Slončík — Michalík.
  • Panathinaikos: Peña — Tsapras/Katris, de Vrij, van Drongelen, Kyriakopoulos — Chirivella, Camara, Taborda — Andino, Tetteh, Levi Garcia.

The probable lineups are based on the starting elevens from the first leg; final squads will be confirmed closer to kick-off.

Match facts

  • The first leg ended in a 2-2 draw, with Hradec Králové scoring in the 89th and 90+6th minutes.
  • Panathinaikos outshot their opponents 9:2 on target and had 57% possession in the first match.
  • Hradec Králové have won three of their first four official home games this season, losing only to Beşiktaş.
  • Panathinaikos have scored in all five matches of the current Conference League qualification campaign.
  • These teams previously met in the European Cup in 1960; now, their European rivalry resumes 66 years later.

The visitors' class and first-leg stats should prove decisive: prediction for Hradec Králové vs Panathinaikos

The first-leg score is a bit misleading. Hradec Králové deserve huge credit for their fighting spirit, but two goals from two shots on target, both after the 89th minute, is hardly a sustainable model for the return leg. For most of the game, Panathinaikos were in control and consistently put the Czech defense under pressure.

The situation in the Czech Republic will be different. The hosts can no longer just sit back — with the aggregate score level, they'll have to push forward and look for their own chances. This should give Panathinaikos more space for quick attacks, where the likes of Tetteh, Garcia, Andino, Pellistri, and Dessers can thrive.

The home advantage and an extra week of preparation make Hradec Králové a dangerous opponent, so I'm not expecting an easy win for the favorites. Nevertheless, the depth of the Greek squad and their clear superiority in creating chances in the first leg tip the balance in favor of the visitors.

Prediction: Panathinaikos to win in regulation time.
