The eighth round of LaLiga Hypermotion opens on Friday, October 2, at the Nuevo Pepico Amat, where Eldense host Real Oviedo. The teams approach the game from very different positions: the hosts sit 19th with five points, while Oviedo are eighth with 11. Eldense have scored only four goals in seven league matches, whereas the visitors have conceded just four.

Eldense: Calleja has improved the structure, but the goals are still missing

Eldense changed head coach in September, appointing Javi Calleja until June 2028. His arrival has already altered the team's approach: the Alicante side are trying to control matches with the ball and play higher up the pitch, but the results have yet to follow. Calleja's first two league games brought defeats against Eibar and Burgos, 1-2 and 0-1 respectively.

The trip to Burgos clearly illustrated the problem. Eldense had 52% possession and registered 11 shots, but created no big chances and finished with only 0.66 expected goals. They spent long periods in possession without turning that control into genuine danger around the penalty area.

The broader numbers are equally concerning. Eldense have collected just five points from seven matches, remain without a home league victory and have scored four times all season. In their last five league games they have managed only two goals. Fidel, Roberto López and Aingeru Olabarrieta provide technique behind the striker, but Calleja still needs to find a way to translate possession into clear chances.

Real Oviedo: better form, but serious problems in attack

Oviedo arrive in Elda after one of their most important wins of the season, a 2-0 victory over Sporting Gijón in the Asturian derby. Julián Calero's side have taken 11 points from seven rounds, winning three matches and conceding only four goals. They have already kept five clean sheets, while their away record reads two victories and one defeat from three games.

However, the derby victory came at a huge cost. Chris Ramos scored the opener but suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be unavailable for a long period. Carlos Fernández and Alexandru Ișfan are also sidelined, leaving Calero with very limited natural options at centre-forward. The coach has publicly mentioned Víctor Mingo and Jacobo González as possible solutions in the role.

There is another concern in goal. Aarón Escandell has been dealing with a shoulder problem and remained a doubt on the eve of the match. If he is not cleared, Miguel Narváez could get his opportunity. On the positive side for Oviedo, Nacho Vidal has returned to group training and could make the squad, while Juan Cruz has also made progress in his recovery.

Calero therefore has to balance two contrasting realities. His team are defending very well and have produced three victories in their last five matches, including clean-sheet wins over Valladolid and Sporting, but the attacking unit that started the season has been heavily disrupted. That should encourage Oviedo to place even greater emphasis on defensive structure and controlled transitions.

Possible lineups

  • Eldense: Ramón Vila; Jesús Clemente, Álex Serra, Floris Smand, Juan Larios; Carlos Guirao, Justin Smith; Fidel, Roberto López, Aingeru Olabarrieta; Jorge Rastrojo.
  • Real Oviedo: Miguel Narváez/Aarón Escandell; David Jiménez, Dani Calvo, Carlos Domínguez, Samu Rodríguez; Youness Lachhab, Dani Villahermosa; Pablo Sáenz, Mikel Goti, Jacobo González; Víctor Mingo.

The selections remain provisional, particularly in Oviedo's goal and attacking positions, where Calero's final decisions depend on Escandell's fitness and how he chooses to replace Chris Ramos.

Key match facts

  • Eldense have scored only four goals in seven league matches.
  • Eldense are still looking for their first home league win of the season.
  • Real Oviedo have conceded only four goals and recorded five clean sheets in seven rounds.
  • Oviedo have won two of their three away matches.
  • The two meetings between these clubs in the 2024/25 Segunda División season ended 1-1 and 0-0.

Oviedo's injuries and Eldense's finishing problems point to a tight contest

Eldense should be aggressive at home because their position in the table demands points, but Calleja has not yet solved the team's main weakness: creating and converting high-quality chances. Even in the encouraging performance at Burgos, possession did not translate into enough danger.

Oviedo look more reliable defensively and have already demonstrated that they can win away from home without dominating possession. At the same time, losing Ramos on top of the other attacking absences significantly reduces Calero's options in the final third. There is little reason for the visitors to turn this into an open game when their defensive organisation has been their strongest asset so far.

The previous meetings between the sides also offer a useful reference: both clashes in the 2024/25 campaign were tight and produced only two goals in total. With Eldense struggling for efficiency and Oviedo forced to reorganise their attack, another match decided by small details looks likely.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals.
