Sheffield United vs Derby County: Can the hosts build on their success?
On October 24, Bramall Lane will host a round-12 Championship clash between Sheffield United and Derby County. Both teams come into the meeting after wins and defeats, carrying different moods but plenty of motivation. The hosts want to build on their success in the previous round, while the visitors will be looking to finally end an unpleasant run.
Sheffield United: a win that could be a turning point
The Blades have made an uneven start to the season, and the team has yet to live up to the expectations of those who expect to see them battling for a return to the Premier League. However, in the previous round, Sheffield United secured an important away result: on October 17, they beat Bristol City 1-0.

That victory was particularly important after a run of disappointing results. It allows the team to breathe a little easier and approach the next game in a more positive frame of mind. Now Sheffield United must prove that the win was no fluke and that the team really is capable of raising its level.
Much will depend in attack on Patrick Bamford, who remains one of the team's main focal points up front. The hosts need to do more than simply keep possession: they must consistently turn their attacks into shots and force the opposition defence into mistakes. At the same time, they cannot afford to leave themselves overly exposed, as Derby will be looking for opportunities on the counterattack.
Derby County: time to escape the losing streak
The visitors are in a less comfortable position. John Eustace's side have lost their last three league matches, with the 0-1 home defeat to Stoke City proving particularly painful. Before that, Derby lost 1-4 to QPR, while the meeting with Wrexham ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Rams' main problem is a lack of goals. Nine goals scored during the opening stretch of the season is not catastrophic, but the team too often leaves itself with no way back into the game. When you concede first, you have to change your game plan, and that is not always done effectively.
Sammy Szmodics is one of the players capable of changing the situation. His movement between the lines and ability to find pockets of space could help the visitors cause problems for the hosts' defence. But to do that, Derby must play more boldly and avoid surrendering the initiative for the entire match.
What can we expect from the game?
On paper, Sheffield United have a slight edge: home advantage and the victory in the previous round should provide an extra boost of confidence. However, the hosts' current form still raises questions, so they should not expect an easy game.
Derby County will surely look to stay organised and wait for their opportunities. If the visitors can withstand the early pressure, this could turn into a tense encounter with few goals.
My prediction — Sheffield United to win.
