The battle against smartphones in the stands: Borussia Dortmund to reward fans for going screen-free
Borussia Dortmund have announced an innovative rewards program for spectators who give up using their mobile phones during the team’s home matches.
Details: The German giants have integrated an interactive “Fan Mode” into their official app, awarding bonus points for every minute a fan’s smartphone screen remains locked. The most dedicated supporters, who accumulate the most points during the match, will receive exclusive club prizes — official shirts signed by the players and gift certificates.
The program was launched after a recent survey of the club’s fan base found that 63 percent of spectators in the stands are regularly distracted by mobile devices during matches. Dortmund’s management hopes the digital incentive will redirect the crowd’s attention to the action on the pitch and reduce fans’ dependence on social media during key moments of the game.
It is worth noting that Signal Iduna Park and its famous Yellow Wall are renowned worldwide for their incredible energy and tradition of nonstop support. Dortmund’s chiefs hope the original project will become a model for the entire Bundesliga, helping preserve the culture of live support in an era of widespread digital technology.
