On Friday, October 23, MC Alger and Rangers International will meet at Stade Ali-la-Pointe in Douéra in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League. Both clubs enter the tie as reigning domestic champions, but the Algerian side's recent defensive numbers and excellent home form give them a noticeable edge ahead of this contest.

MC Alger: defensive stability and a formidable home record

MC Alger enter this stage as the dominant force in Algerian football. Khaled Ben Yahia's team won the 2025/26 Ligue 1 title, their third championship in succession and tenth overall, and their early results this season suggest that the defensive foundation of that success remains intact.

Across their five most recent completed matches in all competitions, MC Alger have recorded three victories and two draws, scoring nine goals and conceding only once. Even more impressive is their record at Stade Ali-la-Pointe: they defeated Nigelec 5-0, MB Rouissat 2-0 and CR Témouchent 1-0 in their last three home matches. That is three wins, three clean sheets and an 8-0 aggregate score.

The 5-0 victory over Nigelec was particularly revealing. Siriman Konaté, Mossi Nduwumwe, Mohamed Saliou Bangoura and Chahreddine Boukholda all contributed in attack, showing that the Algerian champions do not depend on one individual source of goals. Zinedine Ferhat also scored in the recent 1-1 draw with ASO Chlef.

There are, however, some personnel concerns. Captain Ayoub Abdellaoui is currently dealing with a muscular problem, while Ferhat is listed with a thigh injury. Their status for October 23 therefore has to be treated as uncertain rather than assuming either player will definitely start. Even so, Ben Yahia still has enough depth to adjust his defensive and attacking structure.

Rangers International: Nigerian champions with dangerous transitions

Rangers are not arriving as outsiders without arguments of their own. Fidelis Ilechukwu guided the club to the 2025/26 Nigerian championship and subsequently extended his contract until 2027, giving the team continuity on the bench.

Their recent domestic form has also been competitive. Rangers have three wins, one draw and one defeat from their last five league matches, scoring seven goals and conceding five. They beat Ranchers Bees 1-0, Warri Wolves 1-0 and Abia Warriors 3-1, while their latest completed league game ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw away to Barau.

Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo remains one of the key figures. His stoppage-time strike rescued the point against Barau, and Rangers' attacking approach generally relies on quick transitions, aggressive movement and creating overloads in wide areas.

Their continental campaign has been less convincing in terms of controlling matches. Rangers drew both games against AS Sobemap 1-1 in the previous qualifying round and needed a penalty shootout to progress. The Nigerians showed resilience, but they were unable to keep a clean sheet in either match.

Match facts

  • MC Alger are unbeaten in their last five completed matches, with three wins and two draws.
  • The Algerian champions have conceded only one goal across those five games.
  • MC Alger have won their last three home matches without conceding, scoring eight goals.
  • MC Alger beat Nigelec 5-0 at Stade Ali-la-Pointe in the previous Champions League qualifying round.
  • Rangers have won three of their last five league matches, with one draw and one defeat.
  • Rangers scored seven goals and conceded five during that five-game domestic run.
  • Rangers drew both matches against AS Sobemap 1-1 before progressing on penalties.
  • This is the first competitive tie between MC Alger and Rangers International.

Home advantage should tip the balance towards the Algerian champions

Rangers are disciplined enough to make this uncomfortable. Ilechukwu's team possess speed on the counterattack, have the mentality of reigning Nigerian champions and have already shown an ability to stay alive in difficult continental matches.

However, MC Alger's current profile is more convincing. Their defensive record is excellent, they have several different players capable of contributing in attack, and Stade Ali-la-Pointe has become a particularly difficult venue for visiting sides. Three consecutive home wins without conceding are difficult to ignore.

Rangers can threaten in transition, but they have conceded more regularly than their opponents and needed penalties to survive the previous qualifying round. If MC Alger reproduce their recent home intensity and control the spaces Rangers need for counterattacks, the hosts should create enough opportunities to decide the match.

Prediction: MC Alger to win.
