A major scandal has erupted in Zimbabwean football as one of the country's most experienced referees violated the law and received a hefty fine.
Details: According to the official statement from the Zimbabwe Football Association, Kudzai Hiyah, who has served as a linesman in the Zimbabwe Premier League for 14 years, has been banned from all football-related activities for five years. Additionally, he has been fined $116,650.
Hiyah was found guilty of accepting a bribe to influence the outcome of a match between Herentals and Dynamos, which took place in May and ended in a 1-1 draw.
The investigation determined that Hiyah accepted a $400 bribe, which led to this severe punishment.
The significant fine is being seen as a warning to other referees who may be tempted to accept bribes.
Reminder: In an unrelated incident, former Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann recently received a substantial fine for cutting his neighbor's garage roof with a chainsaw.
