The crowd at Tripoli International Stadium started chanting "Allah, Muammar, Libya, and that's all" as they remembered former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. This happened after Libya's game against Benin ended in a goalless draw, which was their seventh time in a row not making it to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Libya's performance in the qualifiers made fans unhappy because the team ended up last in their group with only five points. The draw against Benin on Monday confirmed they wouldn't qualify, which made the supporters very upset.
Videos circulating on social media show fans in unison chanting Gaddafi’s name, a move interpreted by many as a reaction to the team's struggles and a nostalgic nod to better days in Libyan football during Gaddafi's era.
Some supporters interpret the cries as a political statement, while others see them as a symbolic expression of dissatisfaction with Libyan football as it stands right now. The event demonstrates how frustrated Libyan fans are becoming and how much they want to see their country's fortunes turn around.
